Striking Nanoscale Images

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Scientists are getting smarter by the minute

This time, they made this scanning microscope that can make images on nano scale objecs, even in realtime.

They filmed various materials, E. Coli bacteria, human red blood cells after being treated with antibiotics, Cyanobacteria, virus attacking DNA etc.

Beer

Friday, February 15th, 2008

I love beer :)

I love it so much that I once went to Hungary with my friend just to drink beer. And I brought home two large bags full of beer that you can not buy in Serbia.

I even got searched like you’d search a criminal when we entered Hungary. We traveled in a bus full of old women that were smuggling stuff across the border. But it turned out the customs officers knew them but didn’t know us two. So they searched us although we had no bags when entering Hungary. Maybe that’s why we were suspicious, we didn’t smuggle anything.

On our way back to Serbia no one searched us because the bus driver asked all of us for 20 euros to bribe the customs officer ;)

I gave nothing because I wanted to pay the tax for my beer

and since other people gave the money I ended up not paying ;)

ah, the days ;)

My favorite beer is Guinness, Irish black beer. And it tasted best in Nicosia, Cyprus at Plato’s pub. If you ever get to Cyprus, go to Plato’s, you’d love it. And beware of drunken pedestrians. Alcohol can actually CAUSE pregnancy.

They’ve got other great beers at Plato’s bar like Kwak, Belgian light beer. You drink it from special holders and the glasses look really strange. See how it looks here

I like Erdinger beer. My father used to drink it 30 years ago at Munich, Germany. I first tasted it in Hungary.

S#it, Wiki’s got all of those beers ;)

I like Amstel and Loewenbrau and I can drink Becks.

I’ve tasted every beer you can buy in Serbia and Cyprus and many of them in Hungary and Monte Negro.

Right now, this is what I’m drinking

Richard Stallman

This man is saint like… Really

He started the GNU software (now part of Linux, BSD, Solaris and other UNIX systems), launched Free Software Foundation, made a world famous GPL licence (copyleft).

He’s responsible for the development of Emacs and GCC (GNU Compiler Collection), a free C/C++ compiler, etc.

He is one of the most famous hackers. And by the word hacker I mean a guy using his knowledge to find out details about something. Crackers on the other hand use their knowledge to do a crime.

He’s involved in numerous actions, like promoting the boycott of Coca Cola for the things the company is doing around the world, fighting patents (a monopoly on an idea) etc. More on this on RMS website

A year ago or so, he made several lectures in a place where I live, in Belgrade, Serbia.

Here’s a picture of him and me in Belgrade

RMS and me

Recently, he’s been in India, Hyderabad, promoting free software. There we heard he intends to switch to OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) because of the free BIOS and other reasons.

wtf is Jamendo, you may ask

well some people want to look “smart” ;)

they invent names no one can understand (and you have to dig to find out) so to “be cool”

actually, these guys are just implementing a different business model

they made a website where you can listen to/download music for free

good for all of you listeners ;)

their business model OTOH (on the other hand) is to make you watch ads and for you to give donations

they’ve put a nice album at their website home page

take a look at what wiki says about them here

Make Your Own Babies

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

It’s true, if you are a women you won’t need a man to have a child. And the same goes the other way around.

Some scientists at Newcastle upon Tyne University found out a way to make sperm cells from woman’s bone marrow cells and they could make human egg cells using cells from a male.

So, if there is a lesbian couple, they’ll be able to have a child with genetic codes from both females.

The only problem is, without the Y chromosome, those children would be all female.

Imagine that, creating sperm cells from female bone marrow cells.

And creating egg cells from male cells.

This technique also allows one to be both a mother and a father to a child. Because, a woman may combine her eggs with her derived sperm, and a man can combine his sperm and his derived eggs.
Now, that could lead to some genetic health problems ;)

WTF? ;)
